Keep July 4th Safe: Fireworks Are Banned in USPS Mail

USPS Warns: Keep July 4th Fireworks Out of the Mail
As Independence Day approaches, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is issuing an important reminder: while fireworks may light up the sky on July 4th, they categorically do not belong in the mail. This includes all types of fireworks, from small sparklers to larger Roman candles.
Why Fireworks Are Prohibited in USPS Parcels
Fireworks are classified as hazardous materials due to their potential to ignite or explode under certain conditions. Consequently, they are banned from both air and ground transportation by USPS, according to safety protocols.
Acting Postmaster General and CEO Doug Tulino stressed the risks involved: "Shipping fireworks through the mail puts our employees, customers, and transportation networks at serious risk. Even small items like firecrackers or bottle rockets can cause fires, explosions, or injuries if mishandled."
Safety Measures and Consequences
To protect its workforce and facilities, the Postal Service employs advanced technology and rigorous inspection protocols to identify items that cannot be mailed. Those caught attempting to send fireworks can face civil penalties, criminal charges, and other serious consequences.
In 2024 alone, the Postal Inspection Service launched 1,700 investigations related to the mailing of hazardous materials, including fireworks and other explosives, reflecting their ongoing commitment to safety.
Guidelines for a Safe Celebration
The USPS advises anyone planning to send packages this holiday to consult the guidelines listed in Publication 52 – Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail. This publication provides a comprehensive list of items that are deemed hazardous and thus restricted from shipment.
In addition, the Postal Inspection Service has released a public service announcement on the dangers of shipping fireworks in the mail to educate the public on safe mailing practices further.
The reminder from the USPS emphasizes the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure a festive yet secure holiday for all. By keeping fireworks and other hazardous materials out of the postal system, individuals contribute to the safety of postal employees and the overall reliability of mail delivery during one of the year's busiest times.
