U.S. Postal Service Unveils New Holiday and Elie Wiesel Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has unveiled an exciting addition to its stamp collection, featuring a blend of holiday-themed designs and a commemorative issue honoring the esteemed humanitarian, Elie Wiesel. These stamp designs, though preliminary, capture timeless elements of celebration and human resilience.

Stamping the Season with Holiday Cheer

The "Holiday Cheer" collection introduces four distinct designs depicted in a booklet of 20 stamps. Utilizing a collage technique, the stamps present a trio of amaryllis flowers, a holly wreath, an evergreen branch adorned with fruit, and cardinals perched on mistletoe. The designs were crafted using gouache and acrylic paint on vintage background paper, with each element meticulously cut and arranged on archival cotton board. Art director Derry Noyes collaborated with artist Denise Fiedler in bringing these festive illustrations to life, offering a rich visual experience that celebrates the spirit of the season.

Commemorating Character: Elie Wiesel Stamp

The 18th stamp in the Distinguished Americans series pays tribute to Elie Wiesel (1928-2016), a Holocaust survivor whose literary works remain a powerful testament to human endurance and compassion. The stamp, intended for 2-ounce mail, features a 1999 black-and-white photograph of Wiesel captured by Sergey Bermeniev. USPS art director Ethel Kessler designed this issue, drawing attention to a figure whose life and voice have inspired generations.
