USPS Honors Armed Forces with 250th Anniversary Stamps

USPS Celebrates U.S. Armed Forces with Anniversary Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is commemorating a significant milestone in American history with the release of a series of commemorative stamps marking the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps. These stamps serve as a homage to the vital contributions of these branches, which originated during the American Revolutionary War.

"These stamps serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy and unwavering dedication of the women and men who have built and sustained the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps for the past 250 years," said Jeffery Adams, USPS corporate communications vice president. "As we commemorate this significant milestone, we honor their courage, their commitment, and their vital role in safeguarding the freedoms we hold dear."

Ceremony Honors Military Legacy

On May 16, a dedication ceremony at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., marked the official release of these stamps. Jeffery Adams, serving as the dedicating official, was joined by master of ceremonies Lora McLucas, USPS Maryland district manager; along with key military figures such as Lt. Gen. Gregory Brady of the U.S. Army, Vice Adm. Mike Boyle of the U.S. Navy, and Lt. Gen. Paul Rock Jr. of the U.S. Marine Corps. Martin Mieras, a USPS military programs specialist and retired U.S. Army command sergeant major, also participated.

News of the Armed Forces stamps reached a broad audience via social media, with the hashtag #ArmedForces250Stamps. The public could view the ceremony on the Postal Service's Facebook page, and a video of the event was made available on both Facebook and X, expanding the reach to enthusiasts and philatelists alike.

Honoring 250 Years of Service

The inception of these military branches traces back to 1775, amid the struggle for American independence. The Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army on June 14, followed by the Continental Navy on October 13, and the Continental Marines on November 10. Although initially disbanded following the Revolutionary War, the strategic necessity for a permanent military presence led to the formal establishment of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps in the ensuing years.

Today, these branches stand as enduring symbols of national strength and resilience, embodying values such as loyalty, duty, honor, and courage. These themes are visually represented on the stamps, each displaying the respective emblems of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps against a white background.
